Induction Loop Sound Systems for the Hearing Impaired

Description

Induction Loop Systems provide assistance for the hearing impaired. They work by transmitting amplified sound (music or speech etc) that can be received by loop-enabled hearing aids.

Q: Do I Need an Induction Loop System?

A: If you are an employer, a provider of goods, services or facilities, a manager of premises, or involved in designing a new or substantially reconstructed non-domestic building then access and use by disabled persons is one of the considerations you will be concerned with.

This consideration is covered by a number of acts and regulations and includes the possible need for provision of facilities for the hearing impaired.

The Disability Discrimination Act (1995)

Details of the act can be found on the DRC web site

Building Regulations
Part M1: Access to and use of Buildings (2000)

The regulations can be viewed at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister

The Care Standards Act (2002)

For information, visit the the CSCI web site

The Disability Discrimination Act makes it unlawful to discriminate against disabled persons in connection with employment, the provision of goods, facilities and services or management of premises. With a requirement to make "reasonable adjustments" in relation to the disabled person.

Some examples of service providers covered by the act are:

  • local councils, Government departments and agencies
  • emergency services, charities, voluntary organisations
  • hotels, restaurants, pubs, post offices, banks, building societies, solicitors, accountants
  • telecommunications and broadcasting organisations
  • public utilities (such as gas, electricity and water suppliers)
  • national parks, sports stadia, leisure centres, advice agencies
  • theatres, cinemas, hairdressers, shops, market stalls, petrol stations
  • telesales businesses, places of worship, courts, hospitals and clinics

We can be of help in your decision process by providing you with a free estimate of the cost of supply and installation of a hearing loop system suitable for your premises.

For our installations, we offer a range of induction loop equipment from SigNET.

If you would like further information on the legislation, a very helpful short guide can be found at the SigNET web site/guide to induction loop legislation.

British Standards

Q: Does my existing loop installation comply with the current British Standards

A: BS8300 (2002) is the code of practie for the design of buildings and their approaches to meeting the needs of disabled people. The standard recommends the use of a hearing enhancement system in areas used for such things as meetings, lectures, performances etc, and at service receptions and counters where background noise level is high, or glazed screens are used.

Copies of British Standards can be viewed at your local reference library or purchased from British Standards, www.bsi-global.com

SigNET Induction Loop Test Equipment

A pink noise generator and a range of magnetic field strength meters. Ideal for testing and maintaining virtually all makes of induction loop system to ensure compliance with industry accepted standards.
